What is chrome-tanned leather?

Chrome-tanned

Tanned with chromium salts, fast and consistent. Soft, supple, with good moisture resistance, and color stays true almost throughout its lifespan — but does not develop a patina like veg-tan leather.

What is chrome tanning

Chrome tanning uses chromium salts instead of plant tannins. The biggest difference is the time: about one day in the drum, compared to weeks for vegetable tanning. This is also how most leather on the market today is tanned.

What you get

  • Soft and supple with drape. The hide conforms to the hand, suitable for items where a relaxed shape is desired.
  • Good moisture resistance. No worry about water rings like unfinished veg-tan—a major practical advantage for everyday outdoor items.
  • Stable color. Remains unchanged throughout nearly its entire lifespan; customers receive items that look just like the photos.
  • Consistency across hides. Crucial when making goods for sale: ten items of the same pattern look identical.

What you give up

No patina develops—an item made today looks nearly identical three years later. For those who want leather to change over time, this is a deal-breaker; for those who want an item to retain its original look without maintenance, that is exactly what they need. Because the leather is soft, holding a structured shape requires reinforcement—except for structured embossed lines.

Three groups of chrome-tanned leather in stock

  • Embossed, structured — Epsom (most rigid, grid grain), Caviar (round pebble grain), EPI (directional ridged grain), Box Calf (smooth glossy surface yet structured), and Taiga (2.2 mm, suitable for straps). The embossed grain is completely uniform, making batch cutting easy, and the raised grain hides scratches.
  • Soft and drapey — Evercolor, Zermatt, Togo / Odessa Calf, Taurillon Clemence, and ostrich leather.
  • Napped — Nubuck and Velvet. Velvety to the touch, but prone to picking up dirt and absorbing water, so a waterproofing spray is required before use.

What it is suited for

Soft-structured bags, slouchy wallets, footwear, and daily-use items that do not require maintenance. If you need crisp edges and shape retention, choose the structured embossed group. Most chrome-tanned leathers in stock are calfskin, with a smooth, even surface well-suited for small leather goods.

How does chrome tanning differ from veg-tan and semi-vegetable?

Compared to vegetable-tanned leather: chrome is softer, more moisture-resistant, colorfast, and more consistent, but does not develop patina; veg-tan darkens and has more structure, but is sensitive to water. Compared to semi-vegetable tanned leather: semi-vegetable still patinas slightly while chrome stays unchanged. Choose chrome when you want an item that is stable and does not need babying.

Does chrome-tanned leather develop patina?

No. This is the core difference compared to veg-tan leather: chrome leather retains its color almost throughout its lifespan, without darkening or gaining sheen over time. If you want a leather that changes over the years, switch to veg-tan; if you want calfskin that develops patina, the only option is Barenia (semi-vegetable tanned).

Is chrome-tanned leather colorfast and water-resistant?

Yes, this is a strong point. The color stays stable throughout nearly its entire lifespan, and the leather handles moisture far better than unfinished veg-tan—water does not leave dark rings, making it suitable for everyday outdoor items. Only the napped lines (Nubuck, Velvet) still require a waterproofing spray because the napped surface absorbs water.
