About Epsom
Epsom leather (international trade name: Waprolux Calf) is a high-end embossed chrome-tanned male calfskin leather line from the Weinheimer tannery (Germany). This is the iconic material behind the timeless, structured silhouette of Kelly and Birkin (Sellier) bags from Hermès.
Technical specifications & world-standard characteristics:
- Shape retention (Medium–Firm): Dense, firm fibers, fairly stiff thanks to fiber compression during tanning, helping finished goods keep a box shape well.
- Embossed cross grain: Heat-embossed surface creating tightly interlocked grain pebbles, coated with a finish that makes it virtually waterproof and scratch-resistant.
- Lightweight & easy to clean: Significantly lighter than regular cowhide; the surface resists dirt and wipes clean easily with a damp cloth.
- Edge treatment: Multi-layer edge paint required.

Calfskin
Calfskin has finer fibers and is thinner than cowhide, with an even surface and fewer marks. Suitable for small leather goods, wallets, notebook covers, and areas requiring thin folded edges. The trade-off is smaller hides and higher prices.
Characteristics & applications
Tannage
- ChromeTanned with chromium salts, fast and consistent. Soft, supple, with good moisture resistance, and color stays true almost throughout its lifespan — but does not develop a patina like veg-tan leather.

- Embossed grainThe grain is plate-embossed, making it completely uniform across the entire hide and easy to plan for batch cutting.
- StructuredFirm enough to hold its shape without stiffeners — well-suited for items with crisp edges.
