What kind of leather Klein Karoo makes

Klein Karoo is an ostrich tannery in the Klein Karoo region of South Africa, established in 1970. This is the country's traditional ostrich-farming region, so the hides are sourced locally. The Ostrich line in stock comes from this tannery, which is ostrich leather that is chrome-tanned.

Why quill density varies across the hide

Ostrich leather is recognized immediately by its raised round quill bumps. These are the feather quill follicles, where the quills are densest and most distinct along the center of the back, the neck and belly have smaller or sparser quills, and only the leather under the wings is smooth.

This dictates how you cut: you have to plan in advance where you want the quills to sit on the product. A wallet cut in the wrong place will result in a smooth front—still genuine ostrich leather, but losing what people choose it for in the first place. The area with the largest and most distinct quills along the center of the back is limited, so parts that need nice quills must be positioned carefully. Laying pattern pieces out on the hide before cutting is a step you cannot skip, unlike smooth cowhide where cutting anywhere yields the same result.

Leather characteristics

Being chrome-tanned, the leather is soft and supple, while color retention or developing a patina depends on the specific finish. The durability of ostrich leather is higher than it feels in the hand: it looks and feels soft, but it is a soft leather that still holds up to long use, unlike most other soft leathers that tend to degrade quickly. The surface catches light lightly on the quill tips, giving it a lively look without polishing.

Best uses

Bags, watch straps, wallets—items where you want an immediately recognizable accent. The quilled area should be placed where it is most visible: the front of a wallet, the body of a bag, or the exposed section of a strap. Ostrich leather watch straps are a classic choice because the raised quills wrapping around the wrist catch the light nicely. Because it is soft, items that need to hold their shape must be lined; do not expect the hide to hold its own structure like veg-tan cowhide.

Why do some ostrich leather wallets have many quills and others few?

Because quills are densest and most distinct along the center of the back, while the neck and belly have smaller or sparser quills, and under the wings is smooth. The cutter has to choose which parts to place in the quilled section, so from the same hide there will be pieces dense with quills and smooth pieces. A wallet with few quills is not inferior—it is still genuine ostrich leather, that portion of leather is just from the neck, belly, or under the wings.

Is Klein Karoo ostrich leather durable?

Yes. Although soft and supple, ostrich leather that is chrome-tanned holds up to use longer than it feels in the hand, and is more durable than most other soft leathers. Just keep in mind: because it is soft, items that need to maintain their shape should have internal reinforcement.
