Buttero leather through the lens
About Buttero
Buttero leather is a premium smooth vegetable-tanned (veg-tan) cowhide from the Conceria Walpier tannery (Tuscany, Italy). This classic leather is highly rated by craftspeople worldwide for its dense, firm grain fibers, clean cutting, and exceptional edge burnishing.
Key features:
- Smooth grain, superior shape retention: The surface is smooth and flat, with a dense fiber structure that helps finished goods hold their shape well when new, gradually softening and becoming more supple with use.
- Rich patina development: The leather is left completely natural without chemical coatings. When exposed to light, hand oils, and friction, the surface darkens into deep, warm tones with a natural sheen.
- Crisp edge burnishing: Buttero edges take glue and Tokonole gum exceptionally well; just edge-bevel lightly and burnish a few strokes for a firm, mirror-gloss edge.
Specifications & sales policy at Kit Leather:
- Original thickness: Approx. 1.4–1.6 mm, firm temper, excellent shape retention.
- Retail price: 365,000 VND / pia (30×30 cm).
- Cutting policy: Minimum cut of 3 pia from whole hides (Double Shoulder).
- Workshop services: 100% free leather splitting to requested thickness (card slots 0.45 mm, lining 0.6 mm, main body 1.2 mm...).
- Best applications: Vertical wallets, bifold wallets, notebook covers, premium watch straps, leather cases, and accessories requiring clean, sharp edges.
Workshop crafting tips:
- Pattern cutting: The leather is firm, so use a sharp utility knife to make a decisive cut; the cut edge will be completely flat and free of fuzz.
- Protection during assembly: The unfinished surface easily absorbs water and hand sweat during the initial stages, so keep your workbench clean and wear gloves while stitching to avoid leaving fingerprints.
