What leather Weinheimer makes
Weinheimer is a German tannery founded in 1849, specializing in calfskin that is chrome-tanned. The three lines in stock — Box Calf, Epsom, and Togo / Odessa Calf — all come from this tannery.
The defining trait of the German leather in our stock is consistency: hide surfaces are uniform from hide to hide, making yield calculations predictable for production runs. For makers producing goods to sell, this matters more than the unique look of an individual hide — ten wallets of the same model need to look identical, without lighter or darker pieces. Being chrome-tanned, all three lines have stable color and do not develop patina, so you do not have to sort through hides or worry about leather aftercare; in terms of temper, Box Calf is firm, Epsom is medium, while Togo/Odessa has medium temper, soft in hand with bounce.
Three lines, three levels of temper
- Box Calf — flat, glazed smooth grain. It holds its shape well, producing very crisp edges and corners without the need for stiffeners. In exchange, the smooth surface shows every scratch, making it best suited for low-wear items.
- Epsom — embossed with a fine cross-hatch grain. This is a firm leather line that holds its shape better than Togo (Box Calf is also structured and even firmer): it holds a boxy shape with virtually no stiffeners required. The embossed grain offers solid scratch resistance and is easy to clean.
- Togo / Odessa Calf — pronounced pebbled grain, soft, with bounce and medium structure. The raised pebbles hide scratches so it stays looking new through daily use.
Which line to choose
These three lines are essentially three solutions to the same equation, depending on your priorities. For sharp edges and the cleanest surface on low-wear goods: Box Calf. To maintain a structured boxy shape with minimal reinforcement: Epsom. For everyday use without worrying about scratches: Togo / Odessa Calf. All three are calfskin with a fine, uniform grain, differing mainly in surface texture and temper.
All three are chrome-tanned, so the color stays true for virtually the lifespan of the item and requires no maintenance. This is the biggest difference compared to untreated veg-tan: it does not darken and does not water-spot, but in return develops no patina.
Should you choose Box Calf, Epsom, or Togo?
It depends on the project and the wear it will face. Choose Box Calf for low-wear items needing a clean, flat surface and sharp edges; choose Epsom when you want a rigid box shape without heavy reinforcements; choose Togo / Odessa Calf for everyday carry items, as the pebbled grain hides scratches. All three share the same consistency, making it easy to calculate cutting yields when switching between lines.
Does Weinheimer leather darken over time?
No. All three lines are chrome-tanned, so the color remains stable for virtually their entire lifespan, without darkening or developing patina like veg-tan leather. If you want leather that changes color with handling, look into natural veg-tan; if you want consistent color with minimal care, German calfskin is the right choice.
