About Minerva
Minerva is a smooth, oiled vegetable-tanned cowhide — folds lighten and settle back (pull-up), developing patina quickly with daily handling.
To the touch, it feels smooth, slightly supple, and oil-rich rather than stiff and dry. To test it, fold an edge: the crease lightens brightly, and once released, the color slowly settles back — that is pull-up. The surface has only a subtle sheen, never mirror-flat like coated leather.
Minerva is among the fastest-patina leathers in our stock — being both oiled and unfinished, it readily absorbs oils from your hands, and a few weeks of regular handling already warms up its tone noticeably. Save it for goods with folds and daily contact: wallets (the spine is where pull-up shows best), watch straps (curving around the wrist keeps bent areas brighter), or journal covers and sleeves (frequently opened areas will shine up first).
Two things to know beforehand. First, being unfinished, it still absorbs water — standing drops leave circular marks, though the oils make them less pronounced than on Pueblo. Second, a hide often has lighter and darker patches because oil penetration varies across the skin; that is the nature of oiled, unfinished leather, not a defect. Oils can also transfer to paper or light fabrics under prolonged pressure, so keep that in mind if you plan to use fabric lining.
