• Leather width specifications (IMPORTANT NOTE): The splitting machine uses a standard 40 cm band knife and only splits panels under 40 cm wide (widths over 40 cm cannot fit into the machine). Therefore, before sending them over, you need to pre-cut your leather pieces to under 40 cm in width, ideally a maximum of 37 cm to feed into the machine evenly and smoothly.
• Sorting: Group pieces that share the same target thickness into separate bags or bundles.
• Notes: Attach a sticky note or use a marker directly on the packing foam/cover: state clearly how many mm each piece needs to be split down to. For example: "Top part split to 0.3 mm", "Divider split to 0.4 mm", "Lining 0.4 mm", "Outer back keep original".
• Processing & return: As soon as the leather package arrives via Grab, Kit Leather's technicians will check it with the thickness gauge, split it exactly to the specifications on the note, pack it carefully, and book a Grab delivery back to you the same day.

Once the initial thickness of the blank is accurately determined, the machine operator adjusts the blade guide and feeds the leather through. As soon as the leather exits the machine, it is re-measured at multiple points to ensure exact precision down to the fraction of a millimeter, with no variation between the start and end of the strip:

💡 Workshop tip for measuring exact thickness: When a customer requests an odd fractional thickness such as 0.45 mm (the ideal thickness when making card slots for a bifold wallet without adding bulk), measuring just a single thin layer leaves the dial needle sitting midway between 0.4 and 0.5, which is difficult to gauge. The easiest and most accurate method is to fold the leather piece in half and measure two layers: if the dial reads exactly 0.9 mm, it is perfect! When two layers measure exactly 0.9 mm, each layer is guaranteed to be a consistent 0.45 mm.
