About Waxy
Waxy is the renowned waxed vegetable-tanned (veg-tan) cowhide from the Badalassi Carlo tannery (Tuscany, Italy).
Key features:
- Classic pull-up effect: Natural wax penetrates deep into the fibers. When folded or stretched, the shifting oils and waxes create rugged lighter color shifts, which gradually settle back over time.
- Self-healing scratches: The supple waxed surface allows light scratches to easily fade away with a simple rub of a warm finger or light brushing with a horsehair brush.
- Water repellency: Unlike typical veg-tan leather that easily absorbs moisture, Waxy's waxed surface makes water bead up and roll off, minimizing water staining from accidental exposure.
- "Wax bloom" phenomenon: In cold weather, the natural waxes can crystallize into a white powdery haze on the surface. This is proof of genuine, premium Tuscan wax—simply buff gently with a soft cotton cloth or a horsehair brush, and the surface immediately reveals a gorgeous, deep shine.

Crafting tips for makers:
- Gluing: Lightly rough the bonding edges so the glue bonds deeply into the leather fibers.
- Edge burnishing: Bevel the edge and burnish with Tokonole gum or specialized beeswax; the edge will become firm with a natural mirror shine.
