What leather Haas makes
Haas is a French tannery founded in 1842, primarily making calfskin. In stock are five Haas leather lines, spanning from distinctly patinating semi-vegetable tanned leather at one end (Barenia / Novonappa) to color-retaining chrome-tanned leather at the other — embossed EPI, Caviar, and Evercolor, while Zermatt has a smooth surface.
Calfskin comes from young cattle, so the fibers are finer and thinner than cowhide, with an even surface and fewer blemishes. In return, hides are smaller and cost more — which is why calfskin is almost exclusively used for small leather goods rather than large bags. In other words, you pay for a clean, fine surface, and spend it on details viewed up close: wallet flaps, notebook covers, watch strap ends.
Five leather lines, two completely different directions
Barenia / Novonappa is the most distinct leather line: semi-vegetable tanned, smooth without grain, and wax-infused so it feels slightly tacky to the touch. This is the calfskin that develops the most noticeable patina in stock — turning into a dark honey tone after a few months of use. Light scratches fade simply by rubbing with a finger. If you like an item that tells the story of its use over time, this is the leather line to aim for.
The four chrome-tanned leather lines go in the opposite direction: they retain their original color for nearly the entire lifespan of the item, developing no patina. The three embossed leather lines have an evenly consistent grain across the whole hide, making yield calculations for batch cutting very easy; Zermatt has a smooth surface, but in return scratches show clearly. This direction suits those who want to make an item and forget about it — no care required, no worry about uneven color changes over time.
- EPI — parallel ribbed grain with a clear direction, requiring attention to orientation when cutting.
- Caviar — small rounded pebbled grain, hides scratches very well.
- Evercolor — very fine grain, matte surface without shine, softer than the two leather lines above.
- Zermatt — smooth and fine surface, uniform color, soft drape.
Choosing among the four chrome leather lines comes down mainly to choosing the grain. The smaller and rounder the grain, the better it hides scratches, so you need to be less careful when using it; directional grain looks attractive but is demanding to cut because you must align the orientation; and a smooth surface looks the cleanest, but requires gentle handling because scratches are fully exposed.
What it is suitable for
Wallets, cardholders, notebook covers, watch straps — small leather goods that require an attractive leather surface and sharp stitching. This is truly calfskin's home turf: the hides are not large, but you are not making large bags anyway, and the fine surface with few blemishes makes stitches look noticeably cleaner than on cowhide. Choose Barenia if you want the leather to darken over time; choose the chrome group if you want the item to maintain its look without maintenance.
Does Haas calfskin develop patina?
It depends on the leather line. Barenia / Novonappa is semi-vegetable tanned and wax-infused, so it develops the most noticeable patina in stock — turning into a dark honey tone after a few months of use. Meanwhile, the four chrome leather lines retain their color for virtually their entire lifespan, developing no patina. If you want to see the leather change color, take Barenia; if you want the color to stay put, take the chrome group.
Which Haas leather should you choose for wallets?
All five leather lines work well for wallets because they are all calfskin with clean surfaces; the difference is whether you want the wallet to develop patina or stay unchanged. If you want the wallet to turn a honey tone with handling, take Barenia; if you want the wallet to keep its original color and hide scratches, take Caviar because small round pebbles conceal marks best. Wallets constantly rub inside pockets or bags, so the ability to hide scratches is well worth considering.
