EPI leather through the lens
About EPI
EPI leather is chrome-tanned calfskin embossed with parallel ridges — the surface has rhythm and looks neat, but the grain is directional, so you must align the orientation when cutting.
You can see evenly raised ridges running in a single direction across the hide. That is its distinct trait: a rhythmic surface that looks more "intentional" than the organic look of pebbled grain. But precisely because it is directional, rotating a pattern piece makes the surface look completely different.
- Suitable for: wallets, cardholders, notebook covers, cases — items with flat surfaces wide enough for the ridges to run clean and straight; small pieces like card slots still show the grain clearly because the ridges are continuous.
- Color consistency: chrome-tanned, so the tone does not shift; customers receive the item exactly as pictured, and it stays that way a year later.
- Keep in mind: decide on the ridge direction before cutting and keep it consistent across every piece — mismatched direction immediately makes the item look disjointed, and it cannot be fixed. Because of this, EPI uses more leather than symmetrical grain leather lines, and hides scratches less effectively than pebbled grain.
Choose EPI when you want a rhythmic, clean, and intentional surface — in exchange for an extra constraint when cutting.

French leather in stock leans toward calfskin and goatskin: smaller hides, smooth grain, thin substance — well-suited for small leather goods and work requiring sharp stitching.
Calfskin
Calfskin has finer fibers and is thinner than cowhide, with an even surface and fewer marks. Suitable for small leather goods, wallets, notebook covers, and areas requiring thin folded edges. The trade-off is smaller hides and higher prices.
Characteristics & applications
Tannage
- ChromeTanned with chromium salts, fast and consistent. Soft, supple, with good moisture resistance, and color stays true almost throughout its lifespan — but does not develop a patina like veg-tan leather.
Surface characteristics
- Embossed grainThe grain is plate-embossed, making it completely uniform across the entire hide and easy to plan for batch cutting.
- StructuredFirm enough to hold its shape without stiffeners — well-suited for items with crisp edges.
Common uses
- WalletsRequires thin leather that can be folded at the edges while still holding a crease.
- CardholderPrioritize thin, firm leather so card slots do not stretch out.
