What is semi-vegetable tanned leather?

Semi-vegetable tanned

Combines both methods: retains the softness and color stability of chrome tanning, while still developing patina over time from vegetable tanning.

What is semi-vegetable tanning

Semi-vegetable tanning (also called combination tanning) uses both methods: chrome tanning first then retanning with vegetable tannins, or the reverse depending on the tannery. The goal is to take part of the advantages of each side.

What you get from each side

From chrome: the leather is softer than pure veg-tan, handles moisture better, and has more stable color — no need to worry about water rings like unfinished veg-tan, which matters for daily-use items.

From veg-tan: it still retains the ability to develop patina over time. Not as pronounced as pure veg-tan, but it is there — with prolonged use, it still darkens and gains a sheen in frequently touched spots.

When to choose it

This is the choice for anyone who wants leather that changes over time without having to be careful around water, or wants a soft leather that still develops a patina. If your top priority is the most noticeable patina, choose pure veg-tan; if you prioritize colorfastness and not having to maintain it, choose chrome-tanned.

Three semi-vegetable lines in stock

  • Barenia / Novonappa (calfskin, Haas) — smooth surface without grain, wax-infused so it feels slightly grippy to the touch. The line with the most noticeable patina among calfskins: after a few months of use, it shifts to a dark honey tone, and light scratches fade just by rubbing with a finger. Suitable for watch straps, wallets, notebook covers.
  • Chevre Sully (goatskin, Alran) — natural small pebbled grain, soft in hand yet tough. Being thin, folding multiple layers does not create bulk; suitable for multi-compartment wallets and interior lining.
  • Sully Tuning (goatskin, Alran) — same Sully base, different surface finish, standard thickness of 1.2 mm known in advance, no need to skive.

What semi-vegetable leather is suitable for

Best suited for daily-carry items where you still want to see the leather change over time: wallets (especially multi-compartment wallets — thin Sully goatskin folds compactly), watch straps and notebook covers (Barenia develops a honey tone where hands touch), and interior lining for items with a thick cowhide or calfskin exterior. This is an easy-to-use group: it has a subtle patina without demanding delicate care like unfinished veg-tan.

Does semi-vegetable leather develop patina?

Yes, but milder than pure veg-tan. Thanks to the vegetable-tanned part, the leather still gradually darkens and gains a sheen in frequently touched spots after some use — most noticeably Barenia, which shifts to a honey tone. If you want the strongest and fastest patina, pure veg-tan is still better.

Is semi-vegetable leather sensitive to water like veg-tan?

Less. Thanks to the chrome-tanned part, the leather handles moisture better than unfinished veg-tan, so water rings are lighter and less common. However, with wax-infused lines like Barenia, standing water can still leave marks, so it should still be wiped dry quickly.
