Caviar leather through the lens
About Caviar
Caviar leather is chrome-tanned calfskin embossed with a remarkably uniform, tiny round pebbled grain—durable surface, hides scratches very well, and suitable for small leather goods that stay looking like new over time.
To the touch, it feels evenly textured yet smooth, with tiny round pebbles consistent across the entire hide. That pebble texture acts as an "armor": scuffs and pressure marks blend into the grain instead of leaving shiny streaks, so a Caviar wallet carried alongside keys and a phone for a full year still looks neat.
- Suitable for: wallets, cardholders, watch straps, notebook covers—small items requiring a durable surface. The grain is tiny, so even minute pattern pieces retain visible texture without losing definition.
- Easy for batch production: the embossed grain is consistent, so cuts anywhere on the hide look identical, and ten items of the same pattern will match—saving you from having to dodge inconsistent grain areas.
- Keep in mind: do not press an iron or heated die onto the grain surface, as flattened pebbles will not bounce back; deep cuts that penetrate through the grain layer will still show.
Being chrome-tanned, Caviar holds its color virtually for a lifetime and does not darken or develop patina over time—you choose it for surface durability and a clean, sharp look, not for color that changes over time.

French leather in stock leans toward calfskin and goatskin: smaller hides, smooth grain, thin substance — well-suited for small leather goods and work requiring sharp stitching.
Calfskin
Calfskin has finer fibers and is thinner than cowhide, with an even surface and fewer marks. Suitable for small leather goods, wallets, notebook covers, and areas requiring thin folded edges. The trade-off is smaller hides and higher prices.
Characteristics & applications
Tannage
- ChromeTanned with chromium salts, fast and consistent. Soft, supple, with good moisture resistance, and color stays true almost throughout its lifespan — but does not develop a patina like veg-tan leather.
Surface characteristics
- Pebbled grainRounded pebbled surface — hides scratches very well and does not look worn with long-term use.
- Embossed grainThe grain is plate-embossed, making it completely uniform across the entire hide and easy to plan for batch cutting.
- StructuredFirm enough to hold its shape without stiffeners — well-suited for items with crisp edges.
Common uses
- WalletsRequires thin leather that can be folded at the edges while still holding a crease.
- CardholderPrioritize thin, firm leather so card slots do not stretch out.
