Velvet leather through the lens
About Velvet
Velvet leather is chrome-tanned cowhide buffed into a soft, fine napped surface with a supple drape; it requires a water-repellent protective spray before use.
Velvet hides have pronounced drape, feeling noticeably softer and smoother than other napped leathers. The leather also has a directional nap—brushing in opposite directions produces light and dark shading—so remember to orient all pattern pieces in the same direction when cutting.
With that softness and drape, Velvet is best suited for soft bags—giving the body shape and volume without needing stiff reinforcement. It also works well for footwear, though its temper favors relaxed, unconstructed shoes rather than structured silhouettes. Sleeves, cases, and light-use indoor goods are equally good fits. Think twice before using it for items regularly exposed to rain, unless you are willing to maintain it routinely.
A must-do first step: apply a water-repellent spray before use, and reapply periodically as the barrier wears down. The napped surface lacks a protective topcoat, so water leaves dark marks and dust trapped deep in the fibers is hard to pull out. During assembly, apply glue neatly because glue on the nap mats it permanently. For multi-pocket wallets, skive the edges to reduce bulk. Because it is chrome-tanned, the leather holds its color and will not develop a patina like veg-tan leather.

French leather in stock leans toward calfskin and goatskin: smaller hides, smooth grain, thin substance — well-suited for small leather goods and work requiring sharp stitching.
Cowhide
Large hides, dense and thick fiber structure, high tensile strength. Suitable for belts, bases, bag straps, and structured goods. The large hide size lets you cut long patterns without piecing.
