What leather Thule Conceria makes
Thule Conceria is an Italian tannery founded in 1978. The tannery produces calfskin that is chrome-tanned — chromium salts yield a supple hide with stable color and no patina, completely different from naked veg-tan. The Taiga line in stock is chrome-tanned calfskin with a standard thickness of 2.2 mm.
Taiga — calfskin, but thick like cowhide
What sets Taiga apart is its thickness. Calfskin is usually thin — which is why makers choose it for small leather goods. At 2.2 mm, Taiga is significantly thicker than typical calfskin, closer to cowhide. In the hand, the hide feels substantial rather than flimsy like typical calfskin.
The result is a leather with the smooth, uniform grain of calfskin, yet structured enough for bag straps and load-bearing parts without lining or bonding layers. Normally, achieving both smoothness and thickness requires laminating two layers of calfskin together — adding labor, bulk at the edges, and the risk of delamination over time. A single thick hide solves that completely.
Taiga is embossed, so the grain is uniform across the entire hide, making batch cutting simple: ten cut panels look identical, with no need to match grain piece by piece. Because it is chrome-tanned, the color remains stable throughout its lifespan and does not develop a patina — what you see when you buy is pretty much what it stays.
Best used for
Bags and belts — items that need structure and load-bearing strength. At 2.2 mm, cutting requires a sharp blade and folding edges requires skiving first, just like working with cowhide rather than handling thin calfskin with a light touch. Bag straps are where Taiga shines most: thick enough to need no lining, with a smooth, clean grain that keeps edges neat. For belts, this thickness keeps the strap structured and stretches less than thin calfskin, though chrome tanning remains softer than veg-tan, so you only notice differences after extended use.
Does Taiga develop a patina?
No. Taiga is chrome-tanned, so the color stays virtually unchanged over its lifetime, without darkening or developing a sheen from handling like naked veg-tan leather. If you want an item that changes color over time, Taiga is not the right choice; in exchange, you get stable color and virtually zero maintenance.
Why choose Taiga instead of laminating two calfskin layers?
Because Taiga is already 2.2 mm thick in a single solid layer, you can skip laminating. Gluing two layers of thin calfskin to build thickness takes extra labor, bulks up the edges, and the glue line can separate over time. A single thick piece produces sturdier straps and structural components, cleaner edges, and faster workflow.
