Chevre PatNat leather through the lens
About Chevre PatNat
Chevre PatNat is vegetable-tanned goatskin with a black patina finish and natural wrinkled grain—thin and lightweight yet tough.
In hand, you will find it lighter and thinner than cowhide, with a leather surface that feels warm to the touch, slightly textured rather than slick and glossy. The natural wrinkled grain varies from hide to hide. Don't let its thinness fool you: goatskin fibers are tightly interlocked, staying tough through repeated flexing, so wallet fold lines opened daily won't crack even after years.
Choose PatNat when making slim wallets, cardholders, or when you need a lining and interior pockets for pieces with an exterior of thick cowhide or calfskin. Stacking four or five layers at the corner of a wallet still stays flat and closes flush—spots where cowhide would bulk up.
One thing to remember before cutting: this leather does not hold its shape. If you want crisp edges or a boxy silhouette, let another leather line handle the exterior shell. The edges are also thin, making round burnishing difficult, so many makers fold or bind the edges for a clean finish.
