Camouflage leather through the lens
About Camouflage
Camouflage leather is mottled vegetable-tanned cowhide, where each hide forms its own unique pattern with dark and light patches blending into one another.
Looking at the hide, you immediately see multiple color patches bleeding into one another with soft, blurred boundaries rather than sharp edges—some areas take the dye deeply, others lightly. This is intentional by the tannery, not defective dyeing—beginners often confuse the two. Because dye absorption varies across the hide, even the two ends of a single hide differ, making whatever you craft a true one-off.
Choosing Camouflage is choosing the pattern, so it suits items with large, flat panels that allow the mottled patches to fully show: bags, notebook covers, laptop sleeves, folios, or large bifold wallets. Avoid wasting patterned cuts on small components like straps, labels, or card slots—a small cut only catches a single tone and ends up looking no different from plain leather.
Keep this in mind before buying: this leather line cannot yield identical batch runs. If you sell based on sample photos, let customers know in advance that every piece is distinct to avoid complaints. Camouflage also eats up more leather because you have to position cuts so the mottling falls in the right spots, leaving quite a bit of scrap; adjacent panels can also easily show color mismatch. Before making the cut, test-lay your patterns on the hide to visualize where the mottling will land on the finished piece.
